Kayaking with Respect in First Nation Traditional Lands
by Norm Marcy

Norm will talk about the underpinnings of First Nations interests and rights on the BC Coast. He will discuss current developments in public discourse involving First Nations issues. This is especially important in understanding the potential for conflict with the increase in recreation on First Nations traditional territories including comprehending the shifting perspectives of this type of recreational usage. The listeners will also get a better understanding of approaches involving the care of the lands and waters we all share to ensure long term access.

by Fred Pishalski

At our February 25, 2026 SISKA monthly meeting we had two important presentations.

Heather Skippen, Harbour Official for Esquimalt and Nanoose Harbours, Transport Canada enforcement Officer and Casey Zaharoff, Master Warrant Officer, Department of National Defense provided safety information pertaining to the closing of ocean waters and beaches for demolition exercises in the DND’s Rocky Point area. Paddlers considering kayaking in that area need to Search for NAVWARNs before heading out.

EDITOR NOTE : The Navwarns "Rocky Point Demolition Blasting Notices" search link is always near the top of all newsletters under Convenient Links

EDITOR NOTE : See "Whirl Bay Access" next section below for a full map of the closed areas of Whirl Bay and Bentinck Island. Note that this closed area is much larger than what the government marine charts show. I asked this question at the meeting and they will work on it. Stay tuned for the next youtube video of this February meeting including the DND presentation.

Physical Oceanographer Dr. Richard Dewey spoke to us about Tibial Currents and Kayaking. He shared with us an introduction to the theory of tides and what causes the variations on time scales from hours to months. We learned about key aspects of local tides including tidal fronts, back-eddies, and wind-wave-tide interactions. Dr Dewey has published a new set of tide/current tables which can be found at https://www.dewey.ca/

Whirl Bay Access

by Jane Jacek / Ginny Flood

DND and TC (Transport Canada) have initiated meetings with local clubs to inform them that the Whirl Bay area is no longer accessible to the public. The DND Chart below indicates the Whirl Bay areas that are off limits. All the areas with the circles, as well as the area with the green border is DND property and beach access is not allowed, unless it is life/death situation.

Unauthorized access could result in a fine, up to a maximum fine of $5000 for individuals who are not in compliance with existing regulations that already govern access.

The rationale for the change is that there is concern for public safety given there may be undetonated explosives in the area (apparently one found at Rodd Hill recently) and, more importantly, DND is ramping up exercises in the area with very little notice to the public.

For the workshops that have waiting lists, we're reaching out to the Instructors to see if we can add more sessions. Also, if there are any workshop topics that you'd like to see but aren't listed, please let us know and we'll reach out to the partners to see if we can include them this year or add it to next year's offerings.

A huge thanks goes out to Go Kayak, Best Coast Outfitters, BlueDog, SKILS, Cross Currents Kayak, Dancing with the Sea, and Ocean River Sports for working with us to provide this great series of on-water workshops.

Hello SISKA Community:

My name is Jan Kretz, owner of Adventuress Sea Kayaking in Nanoose Bay, BC. After 23 wonderful years, 2025 marked Adventuress’ final season as I move on to new adventures — including summer travels in my new-to-me trailer.

Adventuress has always been about more than tours. It has been a joy and an honour to share respect for the ocean, confidence on the water, and unforgettable experiences with so many incredible people. I will deeply miss the wilderness places, friendships, laughter, fun, and challenges that defined this journey.

Adventuress consistently delivered high-quality guided day tours, multi-day adventures, lessons, Paddle Canada courses, and rentals, earning top ratings on TripAdvisor and Google, along with a strong reputation for professionalism.

This turnkey, lifestyle-focused, owner-operated business is ideally suited to a certified guide or paddling professional interested in stepping into business ownership without starting from scratch. An extensive inventory of kayaks and equipment is included — everything is ready for the next season.

I am offering Adventuress through a private sale and hope to connect with a professional successor who values the lifestyle, guests, and care invested over the past 23 years.

I’d be happy to share further details, photos, and a confidential overview.

If you find it necessary to contact us about an issue you are experiencing the more information you supply in your initial request will go a long way to helping us to quickly resolve the issue.

If you send an email simply saying, for example, that you can't register for a particular paddle or clinic we will need to contact you for more information asking:

what it was that you were trying to do

was there an error message displayed

Generally when an error occurs an error message is displayed. The information in this message goes along way to helping us pinpoint the issue and resolve it fairly quickly. Without this information we will need to contact you for more information and the exchanging of emails simply adds a delay into putting a resolution into place.

So, in order for us to help you when you do submit a request for assistance:

provide a description of what you were doing

included a cop/screen shot of any error message

Oatmeal is back in the news, both as a filling and healthy start to the day and also for its cholesterol lowering benefits (guilty, I do like the finer tastes in life). Oatmeal also travels well in a kayak. Baking it has a slight nutritional edge over raw, but both are beneficial for sure.
Bear Bangers: A Tool for Paddling in Bear Country (with video)

When paddling and camping along our wild coastlines, you’re often traveling through bear habitat. Most of the time, good campsite habits, clean food storage, and situational awareness are all you need. Occasionally, though, wildlife may show a little too much curiosity. In those situations, a bear banger can provide an added layer of protection.

For those of you not familiar with bear bangers, they are small, handheld pyrotechnic devices that produce a loud, gunshot-like bang to deter wildlife. They are typically used with 15 mm pen-style launchers. While they can be effective, they are also classified as fireworks/explosives and must be handled responsibly.

After their recent Alaska–BC kayaking trip — during which they used a banger twice — Rob Zacharias and Alan Campbell created an excellent demonstration video on how to use one safely and effectively. Even if you caught it at the January 2026 SISKA monthly meeting, it’s well worth another look.

Bear Bangers vs. Bear Spray: When to Use Each

Bear bangers are one tool in your wildlife safety kit — and they should be carried in addition to bear spray, not instead of it. Each serves a different purpose.

Bear spray is your last line of defense. Use it if an animal is aggressive, charging, or already very close.

Bear bangers are an early deterrent. They’re intended to scare off wildlife — such as a bear or wolf — that is lingering near camp, approaching, or showing excessive curiosity, but not yet acting aggressively. The loud blast is meant to startle the animal and reinforce that humans are something to avoid.

Think of it this way: bangers can help prevent a situation from escalating; spray is for when it already has.

Additional Background

Safety Considerations

Always fire bear bangers into the air and away from the animal, never directly at wildlife. The goal is to startle, not injure.

Carry them unloaded.

They produce sparks and heat; in dry conditions there is a real fire risk.

Practice in a legal and appropriate location so you understand how your launcher works before you need it.

Regulations: Regulations vary by jurisdiction. Bear bangers are generally prohibited in Canada’s national parks. Always check local rules before your trip.

Where to buy: In Canada, bear bangers are available from numerous retailers such as MEC, Canadian Tire, Valhalla Pure, Sport Check, and others.

Disposal: Unused bear bangers shouldn’t go in the trash. They’re considered hazardous waste, so contact your local municipality for proper disposal options.

As with all wildlife encounters, prevention comes first: store food properly, keep a clean camp, give wildlife space, and stay aware of your surroundings.

TIDAL CURRENTS and KAYAKING
with Dr. Richard Dewey - Oceanographer

Wednesday February 25, 2026 - 7pm.

The presentation will provide an introduction to the theory of tides and what causes the variations on time scales from hours to months. There will be a brief review of tide information sources and how to interpret them. Finally, we will discuss key aspects of local tides most boaters and kayakers in the Pacific Northwest may be familiar with, including tidal fronts, back-eddies, and wind-wave-tide interactions.

Dr. Richard Dewey is a Physical Oceanographer who has lived on and studied the ocean around Vancouver Island for most of his life. Growing up in Victoria, he spent summers cruising throughout the Salish Sea with his family before university, including degrees from both UVic and UBC. Recently retired from Ocean Networks Canada at UVic, where he was a founding director, he once again cruises for 3-4 months each summer with his wife on their 1980 36' tri-cabin trawler.

SISKA is holding a series of Spring Training workshops in conjunction with our company partners from March to mid May 2026.

The workshops will typically run for 3 or 4 hours and will appeal to a range of skill sets from the beginner to the advanced paddler – including:

Here’s a fun idea that Ali M brought along on our New Year’s Eve campout on Darcy Island. Who doesn’t love a cheese fondue? There are a few brands. This one can be found at Superstore. Just bring along a baguette and some dipping vegetables, and voila, you have dinner. She heated it up fireside in her Trangia stove set. Delicious!

Safety Item

by Sybil Seitzinger

Emergency Repair of a Dry Suit Gasket

So, you’re on the beach getting ready for a day trip or a multiday paddle—or you’re already deep into a trip—and as you pull your dry suit on ...oh no! A neck or wrist gasket tears. Suddenly your dry suit is no longer watertight, and if you fall in, cold water will rush in, turning a safety essential into a liability.

What can you do?

Joanne Nicolson suggests carrying a package of "flexible" tape in your repair kit for gasket repairs. There are a few different varieties one can purchase. For example, Tear-Aid Type A is an elastic, clear, strong, and watertight patch for on-the-spot emergency repair such as of a torn gasket.

Of course, this is very much an emergency measure, not a long-term fix. Plan to replace the damaged gasket once you are home.

As a bonus, Tear-Aid Type A and other similar flexible tapes are a versatile addition to any paddler’s kit. They also bond to synthetic fabrics so work well for quick repairs to tents, torn dry suites, puffy jackets, dry bags, and other gear when you’re far from help.

This small addition to your repair kit just might save a trip when you least expect to need it.

Kayaking from Petersburg Alaska to Port Hardy BC
with Alan Campbell and Rob Zacharias

In the summer of 2024 long time SISKA members and old friends, Alan Campbell and Rob Zacharias kayaked from Petersburg, Alaska to Port Hardy BC. This completed a trifecta of epic coastal expeditions that had begun a decade earlier with their Paddling to Victoria-Juneau trip as part of the legendary “Paddle Fanatics” story.

Rob and Alan have been friends for a long time, both coming from a previous men’s group “Merry Men of Sherlock”. Some of the men from this group have been paddling together since the late 1980s.

This journey from the middle of Southeast Alaska to the top of Vancouver Island took Alan and Rob through some amazing places and tested their paddling and camping skills. The trip had its share of ups and downs with every wind swell, weather, sea and shore condition experienced at some point over the several weeks it took. The presentation will trace their route, highlight some of their memorial incidents and celebrate the great sport of sea kayaking our gorgeous ocean shores.

Another memorable Christmas lunch was held at the Royal Victoria Yacht Club with 88 members attending and 2 guests, Jamie and Kim Dawson from Ocean River Sports. There was even a short wait list of 4 members wishing to attend. We enjoyed a lovely buffet lunch, many prizes donated by our very generous retailers and of course Heads & Tails was back. The game, developed by Deb Leach, was challenging, educational and fun and this year led by Alan Campbell as Deb was kayaking in the Baja. Dorothea Hoffman received a Lifetime Membership to Siska presented by the President, Jane Jacek. We ended the event with everyone joining in the Christmas songs led by guitarists, Jim Lamb, Simon Williams and singers Jewel Spooner and Alan Campbell (Siska’s Sea Shanty). Lynn Baier, our MC, did a spectacular job. Thanks to the Elf committee for volunteering and their support to make the event a success.

We have had a couple of well attended clinics so far at Pearkes Rec Center, with more to come.

We have the following in the works:

Injury Prevention for Paddlers, January 27, by Jennie Sutton, our resident registered (but retired) physiotherapist

Planning a Day Paddle, put on by Jo Nicolson, not yet scheduled, but should be in February.

Kayak Repairs and More, February 28 at Blackline in Sidney, SOLD OUT (another scheduled, see below)

Kayak Repairs and More, April 18 at Blackline in Sidney. This will sell out fast, watch for the launch soon

Tides and Currents, Understanding Them, March 13, by SKILS. This will be a dynamic clinic, and a bargain at $35

Navigation by Chart and Compass, March 20 and 27 by SKILS, This is a 2 night clinic, and a bargain at $70

The 2 SKILS clinics are at Pearkes, and as mentioned, clinics like this can cost over $80, so a real bargain. These will be launched in January to ensure we give folks lots of time, but we do expect to sell out quickly, so act accordingly.

As always, if anyone knows of a clinic they would like, or one they could offer, feel free to contact the Off Water team at the emails listed in the Contacts section of the SISKA website.

by Debbie Leach

CHECK! Start 2026 off with your personalized checklist for a day trip. This may help you remember the VHF, spray skirt, lunch bag or shore shoes that may have been left at home in the past.

by Lynn Baier

Happy New Year!

In the November newsletter I shared my camp kitchen kit. Thanks to Greg R for some research on the use of a diffuser on a stove attached to the fuel canister. Apparently it can overheat the fuel with a risk of explosion. I doubt there’s more risk than putting a pot on top, but do take note.

KOREAN BEEF

This one will definitely be going into the rotation. I’m usually overly optimistic about how many trips I will be getting in and still have lots of dehydrated ingredients, so I experiment. I took dehydrated shredded beef and rehydrated it with Bulgogi sauce and boiling water for about half an hour. I rehydrated, then stir fried, mushrooms and Red Barn Kale Crunch salad in sesame oil. I served the vegetables and Bulgogi beef over three minute noodles. It was full of flavour and a definite winner. In hindsight I think glass noodles would have been a better choice, and rice would work well too. I might also try dehydrating the beef in the Bulgogi sauce to keep the weight down. I hope you like it!

How far does your whistle’s sound carry?
Most of us keep a whistle clipped to our PFD—but how well do you know its real-world range? Next time you’re on the water with others, do a quick test to find out how far your whistle can be heard. Try it in both upwind and downwind conditions; the difference can be surprising. It’s valuable information should you ever need to signal for help.

You can also test how the whistle performs when it’s taking on water—a realistic scenario if you’re in the water with waves breaking over you.
When choosing a whistle, look for a pealess design, high volume (advertised as up to 1 mile – really?? – see what your test indicates), easy airflow, bright color, buoyancy, and secure attachment. According to several reviews, the Storm Safety Whistle and Fox 40 series (Classic, Sonic Blast) consistently rank among the best. The Storm is often highlighted for sheer loudness, while the Fox 40 models are praised for clear, directional sound.
Very important – don’t forget to carry and have your marine radio on!

What does “pealess” mean?
A pealess whistle has no internal moving parts (“pea”). Instead, sound is created by a precisely shaped air chamber and a sharp edge called a fipple, producing a loud, high-pitched, reliable signal even when wet.

Passed Away November 10, 2025

Sadly we have lost another founder of SISKA.

Gary Allen, whom many of you know and love, bid farewell to this world on November 10th at 5pm.
Gary's partner Glynis has posted a lovely tribute on Gary's FB page.
We'll miss you Gary. Your kindness, friendship and skilled leadership. Our hearts go out to Glynis and all of Gary's family.

The Founding Of SISKA

by Mike Jackson

I recently dug through my archive of old emails (just 1.5 million of them, and 65k of them with SISKA mentioned!) and found hundreds related to the foundation of SISKA. It was late in 2007 when five VCKC directors decided that it was time to form a sea kayak only club. Gary Allen, Glynis Newman, Susan Duhamel, Tony Copping and myself had several meetings and sent hundreds of emails! (we actually began talking about this in April 2007! We quickly realized that we needed a treasurer and Dennis McMillan joined us as he had some bookkeeping experience. By February 27 2008 we were ready to have our first meeting - 75 in attendance! This was an organizational and informational meeting about the club. Our second regular meeting was in March 2008 when we hosted John Kimantas at Saanich Commonwealth Place. There was already a Victoria Sea Kayak Network so we needed a different name. We asked for submissions of suggested names and Gary Allen’s suggestion of South Island Sea Kayaking Association (SISKA) was voted as our club’s name. We also had a “competition” for the club logo and the winning logo is the one we still have! Tony Copping and Mike Jackson worked on the first web site and had it up by mid-April 2008. Since that time we were able to pass the torch to the amazing Dave Ostapovitch who has made our site what it is today.

Our first meeting was held February 27th, 2008 and was a combination of education and club business. I am pasting below some notes that were sent out after the meeting by Glynis Newman:

Hi everyone!

First…we (the interim executive) would like to thank you for all the positive response we received before and especially after our first meeting last Wednesday. Your enthusiastic and supportive phonecalls and e-mails have been energizing! The turnout at the meeting was more than we expected (about 75 people!!) and it was great to see so many familiar faces and so many new faces!!

For those of you who couldn’t make the meeting and have asked to be kept informed, we had a GREAT presentation by Dave Giuliani and Michael Jackson about different sea birds, and marine life that we might encounter while paddling…and how best to photograph them. We will all be much more aware next time we’re on the water! After the presentation, we had our first “meeting” – here’s the gist of it:

Gary Allen (the interim chairperson) described the framework of the club which had been constructed from comments/suggestions of many sea kayakers; the experience of VCKC past kayak program directors and Executive members; and research into what other existing sea kayak associations offer. This club shall:

target all skill levels, all ages, and both sexes of active sea kayakers in the Greater Victoria area

focus on education and safe paddling for all levels of paddling skill from beginner to advanced - through Paddle Canada and other recognized national groups

provide opportunities for paddlers to get together on and off the water to share their passion for sea kayaking

be actively involved in “issues” pertinent to sea kayakers e.g. safety, environmental concerns, access and parking concerns, etc

have a meeting place in the Royal Oak "area" to make it more central for people living outside of Victoria. (This has been tricky to accomplish!)

not provide rental boats or equipment, or boat storage

Michael Jackson (interim treasurer), Tony Copping (interim membership and website manager), Susan Duhamel (interim secretary),and Glynis Newman (interim communications/new member liaison) all gave updates about their areas. The membership fee was suggested to be $40… (has this changed?!)

Michael Jackson, SISKA founder and past president.

To assist in keeping track of finances, I have set up 4 separate email addresses, specifically for Membership payments, OnWater events (including pool sessions), OffWater Clinics, and the Christmas Party.

Please follow the instructions you receive when registering for an event or renewing your membership, and send your e-transfer payment to the proper email address. You will likely end up with multiple SISKA email addresses (up to 4) in the Contact List of your financial institution.

Thank you,

by Gary Jacek

If you are not getting SISKA email in response to your trip requests, it may be landing in your spam folder.

So how can you confirm you are on a SISKA paddle?

Well, it is surprisingly easy.

Just log on to the SISKA web site at https://www.siska.ca

Once you have signed on using your userid and password, hover your mouse over the Members tab.

Then click on List My Clinics & Paddles. If you are on the manifest for a clinic and/or a paddle, it will appear here.

And you will soon be able to see if you are on the manifest, or on the waitlist, or if your request has been submitted but not yet examined by the trip leader.

I thought I would try one of this brand and wasn’t disappointed.

It comes with three parts. There is a spice mix which I added to my dehydrated shredded chicken (for two), which I rehydrated by covering it with boiled water and letting it sit for half an hour. I pan fried the packet of ginger and garlic paste in a bit of oil, then added in the chicken mixture. Finally I mixed in the jerk sauce. I was feeling a bit lazy so served it on a bun but it would have been better over rice. I will definitely buy it again. It was on the edge of my tolerance for hot spice but was very tasty.

Identification Label: "If Found" Sticker

An often-overlooked but important kayak safety practice is attaching an "If Found" identification sticker to your kayak. Properly labeling your boat helps the Coast Guard, Search and Rescue (SAR), or other emergency responders quickly determine whether an unattended kayak signals a real emergency. If your kayak is found adrift and you are safe on shore, an unlabeled boat can trigger unnecessary search operations—pulling vital resources away from people who truly need help.

Identification is also useful if your kayak is washed away by a sudden wave or strong wind while you’re camping or exploring a beach. (You might also consider putting a sticker on your paddle or other equipment).

While the Coast Guard and many local marine stores no longer supply "If Found" stickers, it’s easy to make your own and adhering it to the inside of your kayak:

Create a DIY label by writing your information on waterproof paper with a waterproof marker and laminating it (many office supply stores can do this)

Use waterproof stickers that you write on yourself.

Order custom waterproof decals from vendors such as sea-id.com.

No matter which option you choose, be sure to include:

Your name

Your mobile phone number

A secondary contact number for someone on land (in case your phone is unreachable, battery is dead, or water-damaged) or in worst case you are separated from your kayak

Attach an “If Found” label to your kayak—it’s a small step that can potentially prevent big problems

Paddles - Cancellations and Waitlist

by Jane Jacek

One of the reasons people join our club is to participate in the paddles we offer.

We have noticed that a number of members are signing up for a paddle and then as the date gets closer they are dropping out. For example, there have been a couple of paddles with up to 18 people registered with two paddle leaders and then by the day of the paddle there were only 9 paddlers. We understand when illness or family matters require people to drop out. But otherwise, please be mindful when registering, as others might really want to go on the paddle.

I have also heard from members that they see a paddle is full with a waitlist and think they will not get on the paddle. Please always add your name to the waitlist, as we are now frequently adding a second paddle leader to allow for a larger group. Or members are bowing out of a paddle and so the leader is contacting those on the waitlist.

Thank you for your understanding,
Jane

by Rod Stiebel

We started off the season with our regular clinics for "Wind and Weather” in October and "VHF Radios for Kayakers” on November 21 (there is still a few spots left). We do have more offerings for the months of January and February, so stay tuned. We also have some dynamic clinics being put on by SKILS, also at the Pearkes Rec. Center, one is "Tides and Currents", on Friday March 13 and the other, which will be in 2 night sessions on "Navigation Basics using Chart and Compass" on Friday March 20, and 27th. Both of these have been sorely missing from our offerings. As most know, we offer these regular SISKA volunteer run clinics at a $15 fee for the night. The SKILS offerings will be $35 per evening, so the 2 night Navigation clinic will be $70 total. This is indeed a great bargain, and space will be limited to 16 members, with a minimum of 8 to proceed for each night. So, stay tuned, as we will announce these in the new year.

VHF Radio Check

by Gary Jacek

If you are one of the VHF Radio-carrying SISKA members, quite often as you get on the water you will hear something like:

“Kayaker Bob radio check”…

”Kayaker Sue radio check”…

”Kayaker Steve radio check”…

”Kayaker James radio check”

and so on.

What you may not know is that Bob, Sue, Steve and James (whether they know it, or not) are all requesting a signal report.

A signal report provides the relative strength and audibility of your signal.

Unless someone responds to Bob, Sue, Steve and James, these paddlers will have no idea if:

the transmit button on their radio is broken

the battery has insufficient charge to send a strong signal

the tiny microphone opening on their radio is contaminated with sand, salt or even water

the antenna connection pin that inserts into the radio is corroded

the wire coil inside the rubber antenna is broken

the radio is tuned to an incorrect channel

These are all safety issues since you cannot make an effective call for help with a compromised radio.

Next time you are getting on the water with a group, try this instead:

“Kayaker Bob, radio check”

“This is kayaker Sue, I hear you loud and clear Bob”

“This is kayaker Steve, I hear you loud and clear Sue”

“This is kayaker James, your voice is very weak Steve” (possible microphone contamination or corroded antenna connection or broken antenna coil)

“This is kayaker Steve, thanks for the advice James. I’ll check my radio”

And at this point, Kayaker Bill will paddle up to one of the others to ask, “Didn’t you hear me on your radio?”

Nope! And now Bill knows he has a problem.

And that is the value of a Radio Check.

Have a safe and pleasant paddling day.

by Lynn Baier

What’s in your kitchen kit? Part of the fun for me is to make my kitchen items lightweight and efficient. I have an expedition set that I use when there are potential long days paddling, and all I want to do is add boiling water and rehydrate meals. Then I have add ins for shorter trips that provide more room in the hatches for actually cooking meals.

Here’s my kit for two:

...and deconstructed

A double size jetboil

Fuel (I have a silicone bowl cover on it, as they tend to rust)

Two French presses

A large thermos for boiled water and a quick start on am coffee

Two small thermoses for rehydrating and eating meals

Two dollar store silicone spoons

A knife

Reusable bamboo towels

A lighter

Spare lighters

A spare stove

A scraper

A folding bucket

Eco soap

Hand sanitizer

A cutting mat which doubles as a charcuterie board

And for feeding more people or real cooking:

A three litre pot

A frying pan that doubles as the pot lid and a plate

A diffuser which also makes a good toaster

I love new ideas, so please feel free to share.

Safety Item - Rescue Knives

by Sybil Seitzinger and Tim Frick

Sharp Choices for Sea Kayakers

A rescue knife is an essential safety tool for sea kayakers. It’s designed to quickly free paddlers or gear from tangled ropes, fishing lines, or other snags that can occur during rescues or recoveries.

A good rescue knife will have a sharp, serrated edge that cuts effectively through rope and webbing. It will also feature a sheath that attaches securely to a rescue PFD, ensuring the knife is always accessible when needed. Most are made from rust-resistant stainless steel and have a textured, non-slip handle for a secure grip in wet conditions.

For knives mounted on a PFD, most paddlers recommend a fixed-blade model. Fixed blades are quick to deploy and safer in emergencies since they don’t require opening or folding. Folding knives, on the other hand, are more compact and easier to stow — handy if your PFD is already crowded with gear.

When choosing a blade, look for a serrated edge (either full or partial) to cut rope and vegetation quickly. A straight edge is useful for finer tasks like slicing or trimming. Because rescues often happen in rough water, a fixed, partially serrated blade is typically the most effective.

Fixed-blade knives come in three main designs:

All serrated

Half serrated / half straight

Double-edged (serrated on one side, straight on the other)

Tim advises that the first two options are the safest and most practical. Double-edged blades can be hazardous in waves or current since the unused edge may contact you or your equipment. A half-and-half blade with a dull back side offers the best balance of safety and versatility.

While multi-tools such as a Swiss Army knife are handy for general tasks—cutting food, opening cans, or field repairs—they’re not a substitute for a dedicated rescue knife when safety and speed matter.

Editor Note - If you want to splurge I would research Spyderco SALT series knives. They use H2 steel that does not rust in saltwater. I've had a serrated one for years and never wash it and it's as good as new but the screws holding the handle to the steel have rusted. Can't have it all I guess. Maybe the current ones are even better?
