New SISKA Web & Mobile Site - Coming Soon!

by Konrad Sechley

Ginny Flood, Andrew Cusack, Konrad Sechley

There has been much activity in redesigning the SISKA web site to streamline the database, reduce issues, increase security, and make the site mobile friendly - and all of this work is finally coming to fruition with an anticipated release date at the end of August. Many thanks to Geoff Nicol for the many hours he has put into this project and to Dave O for his continued support of the project and web site.

A presentation introducing the revised SISKA web site was made during SISKA AGM meeting in April and members were encouraged to test the site and provide feedback. This process is ongoing and members are encouraged to test drive the new site both from their home computer and mobile device.

The test site (use your regular log-in ID) can be accessed at: https://v6.siska.ca

The test site is isolated from the main SISKA database, so you can play around with the site without fear of making any alterations to the main data base - sign up for a paddle, become a SISKA member, check out the calendar. If you send out an email it will just go to you and no one else. If you are a paddle leader, set up a paddle and test the various options.

Instructional videos about the revised web site will be available later this summer and will be accessible through the current SISKA web site and the test web site. Once these videos are ready a note will be sent out to the membership.

If you have any suggestions or identify any issues while testing the site please send your comments to: Geoff Nicol and Dave O at: web@siska.ca

Once the web site is officially released in late August any issues with the site should be sent to: web@siska.ca

Many thanks to Geoff and Dave for this effort!

Kagoagh Lodge, in Hecate Cove, Quatsino Sound
by Rod Stiebel

The Lodge, the Legend.

This place is a Wilderness Wonderland! The Kagoagh Lodge, (pronounced Kay-Oh). Run by Tyler and Gina, it’s a family owned resort, mostly for fishing, but they have graciously opened up the lodge for groups of paddlers the last few years.
They can accommodate up to 16 paddlers, in full luxury, with gourmet meals every day, with super attentive staff, including Mac, Gina’s right hand Gal.

The hot tub comes in handy after a long paddle, and pool, table tennis and more await in the grand hall of the resort. Here, you want for nothing, including Bloody Caesars, made by Mac, delish!

This place offers a little bit of everything when it comes to paddling. You can go on the “Wild Side”, as BJ will explain in the first trip, visiting Marble River for some active water play. Or go for the “Mild Side”, where the pace is slower, the tides are lower and the intertidal viewing is unmatched.

You can decide what you like, after you hear our stories..

BJ Porter. The Wild Side May 10 to 14, 2026

The Wild Side Gang

We were a combination of returning and first time guests of Kagoagh Lodge, and as expected Gina and Tyler’s hospitality was kind, skilful and unstinting.

We arranged our own accommodation for the night of May 9th but we met up as a large group to share a meal at the pub at the Kwa'lilas Hotel. That was just for fun but we met briefly after to discuss water taxi and paddling plans. Each subsequent evening we discussed plans for the following day.

Paddling in and out via Quatsino Narrows was fun; we were close to maximum flood and ebb for the days we were there.

There was still more fun to be had on a day trip to the Marble River! There is an infamous grotto that shall henceforward be named The Cave That Swallows Boats, after four SISKA capsizes in three years. It is a right angle turn downstream from an overflowing ‘V’ that is often very high volume and fast.

This year I was one of its hapless victims, playing successfully on the right of the ‘V’ and then helplessly pushed backward into the wall under the overhang when I tried the left hand side. Another paddler, heading downstream, underestimated the strength of the water pushing his boat into that same wall and thought the main flow would take him around safely; not so much. Helmets are now STRONGLY recommended for anyone exploring the Marble River.

We lined our kayaks (with great effort) around the offending ‘V’ only to find a waterfall impeding our travel upstream almost right away. More fun at the base of the falls.

Each paddling day we had a shorter and a longer paddle, which served everyone’s needs admirably. The longest paddle was a circumnavigation of Drake Island.

One wildlife highlight, seen by some lucky folk, was an eagle unable to take flight with a large fish, swimming breast stroke style to shore with it. We saw a number of sea otters, principally in the Marble River estuary where we estimated their numbers as twenty-five plus.

Maybe it’s not such a wild life any more, but we enjoyed really fun evenings showing off the laughable depth of our incompetence in ping pong, pool, chess, darts, and air hockey.

We had a compliment of 14 paddlers and my non-paddling assistant, my lovely wife, Andrea, who loves the walks in the woods with Stella, the Lodge Dog, the camaraderie and the scrumptious meals served daily. We had some new folks, and, of course the regulars, like ourselves, who have been going for 3 years now, and a 4th to follow!

Our group also met at Kwa’lillas for dinner the night before our water taxi departure, it is a lovely Indigenous run hotel in Port Hardy, we stayed there also, and would recommend it to anyone. It is only a 20 minute drive from there to Coal Harbour and the water taxi.

We had the lower tides, and could not paddle out this year, as the currents through the narrows were too fast at arrival time. That said, because we had low tides, the wild life viewing was quite rewarding. We did 3 full days of paddling, not including a short one late afternoon on arrival day. A circumnavigation of Drake Island, and visit to Pamphlet Cove and Atkins Cove did not disappoint on all the intertidal life, and yes! The stars are back! Ochre, Leather, Bat and Blood stars galore. We also were treated to number of Sea Otters, and a very curious River Otter in Pamphlet Cove.

The mandatory visit to the Quatsino Village Museum was also accomplished on one of the shorter paddles. We did put in approximately 32nm, or 60 kms. It was easy going as we had lovely weather and almost no winds.

Being the "Mild Side" gang, we had no capsizes, but maybe a few equipment issues, that were easily repaired by the Pit Crew, spear-headed by Gary J. We did have at least one brave soul that took a dip in the Saltchuck, brava Karen! The hot tub did get frequent use, so nice after a long paddle.

Bottom line, if you can, get out there, Gina and Tyler are great hosts, the paddling is super, as is the food and accommodations. There are plans to have a SISKA led group next year, all that is needed is a paddle leader willing to organize and lead a group. If you enjoyed the Broken Group, this will that plus LUXURY.
Safety Item - Heat Exhaustion

by Sybil Seitzinger

Prepare for—and Avoid—Heat Exhaustion

Summer paddling is some of the best of the year, although with the warmer temperatures heat exhaustion can be a problem. Heat exhaustion is serious, but it’s also very preventable. It can sneak up on you when you mix warm weather, sun, and steady paddling—and a dry suit can intensify the effect.
Watch for signs like dizziness, fatigue, heavy sweating, nausea, or a headache—those are your cues to act early and very importantly avoid heatstroke. A little planning, on and off the water, goes a long way in avoiding heat exhaustion and dehydration.
Most of this will sound familiar—but it’s worth keeping top of mind before heading out.

A few key things to keep in mind:

Time of day:
If you’re organizing your own paddle, aim for earlier or late afternoon starts to avoid peak heat. Many SISKA paddles run right through the warmest part of the day (roughly 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), so plan accordingly and pace yourself.

Hydration:
Start hydrating before you launch (or even the night before) and keep drinking regularly—about 300 ml (10 oz) per hour is a good target. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty. Cold drinks, or adding a bit of diluted juice or sports drink, can make it easier to keep drinking.

Food:
Eat before and during your paddle. Snacks that help replace electrolytes—like fruit, nuts, yogurt, or something salty—can make a difference over a long day.

Clothing and sunscreen:
Wear light, breathable layers under your drysuit when possible, and bring a hat. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin and reapply regularly.

Cool off:
Use the water to your advantage—dip your hands, splash your face, or pour water over your head. A wet cloth around your neck or forehead helps. And if you’re comfortable rolling, that works too.

Seek shade:
Take breaks when you can. The shady side of an island or a short shore stop in the shade can help you cool down and reset.

If you experience increasing symptoms of heat exhaustion, alert your fellow paddlers—including the trip leader—right away. Take immediate steps to cool down and rehydrate, as symptoms can quickly progress to life-threatening heatstroke if ignored.

Saturday June 6, 2026

This is the main SISKA event before the summer paddling season kicks in to top gear. All are welcome, not just members, so invite your non SISKA friends. Drop by for an hour, or bring your lunch and make a day of it. Besides the famous Gear Swap, we will have a few different kayaks to demo, and our regular demos and info sessions, land and water based clinics, plus a relaxed afternoon paddle. You MUST register for these clinics at president@siska.ca to Jane, for any of these FREE clinics or the paddle.

Coffee and snacks will be offered at the SISKA Welcome Tent, where you can get more info and directions from our KayakFest Ambassadors. A great opportunity to see what is new, meet a bunch of other members, and maybe even get a few new members to join. The main idea is a fun, relaxed event. So save the date, and we will see you there!

by Fred Pishalski

Wednesday May 27, 2026 - 7:00pm

with Jacques Sirois NWP

Topic - NEARBY NATURE IN AND NEAR, THE VICTORIA HARBOUR MIGRATORY BIRD SANCTUARY

Tonight's meeting is co-sponsored along with Ocean River Sports.

When SISKA asked Jacques if he would be our May speaker he mentioned that Ocean River had asked if he would do a talk for them. In conversation with Jacques and Jamie Dawson from OR, it was decided to do a joint presentation.

Ocean River, a locally owned business, has been a cornerstone of the Victoria paddling community for over 40 years. Ocean River offers guided tours, professional instruction, clinics, rentals, and a full retail shop stocked with quality gear. They don’t just sell the lifestyle — they live it.

Ocean River has been a valued SISKA supporter for years.

Naturalist, birdwatcher and kayaker, Jacques has been promoting the revitalization of historic Victoria Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary (est.1923) for two decades. He will talk about recent, sightings of birds and mammals as well as various restoration projects and events.

He is a partner of the Greater Victoria NatureHood (GVNH), an initiative promoted by Nature Canada* with a particular interest in the future of three regional, historic Migratory Bird Sanctuaries and “Nature in the City”.

GVNH is also promoting the creation of a UNESCO Biosphere Region in B.C.’s Capital Region.

* originally known as the Audubon Society of Canada.

Jacques, a volunteer warden at the Trial Islands Ecological Preserve, has counted 150 California sea lions, five Steller sea lions and 300 harbour seals on a kayak trip around the rocky shores. “We haven’t seen anything like this for over 25 years.”

Jacques is an influential Canadian ornithologist and conservationist, best known for his work restoring the Migratory Bird Sanctuary and promoting urban nature initiatives in Greater Victoria.

On top of all that, Jacques has been involved with habitat restoration and removal of invasive species. He has led volunteer-driven clearing of non-native plants such as English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, and daphne at key locations including the McNeill Bay bluff and Kitty Islet shoreline. The cleared areas were replanted with indigenous species such as Garry oaks, Pacific crabapple, Saskatoons, and Oregon grape to restore habitat for migratory birds.

It’s that time of year to get all prepped to go to where the wilderness calls you. I do mostly "ingredients" dehydrating, with some "complete meals" dehydrating. Either way is great. Remember to do onions and garlic outside or in the garage. They can permeate the walls I swear. Here’s a recipe for seeded crackers to whet your appetite.

Safety Item

by Sybil Seitzinger

Who Tows? Not the Trip Leader

In reviewing trip reports from the past 12 months, the most frequently noted safety comment involved a tired paddler that needed a tow. At the recent SISKA Trip Leaders meeting, several important points were discussed that all SISKA members should keep in mind regarding towing.

If you plan to join a SISKA paddle and are unsure of your ability (e.g. injury, not feeling well, weather/water conditions) to complete the full journey and may need a tow, it is your responsibility to let the trip leader know during the pre-paddle beach briefing. The leader will then ask if any participant is willing to volunteer as a potential tow. If no one is available, the trip leader reserves the right to exclude you from that paddle.
It is not the responsibility of the trip leader to tow participants. In fact, trip leaders should avoid taking on towing duties, as their role is to manage the group and overall safety.

As we all know, conditions can change quickly. Fatigue, injury, or worsening weather and water conditions may mean that even strong paddlers require assistance. As soon as you suspect that you might need a tow, let the trip leader know so that they can identify someone to tow you if needed.

If you have not received towing training (included in PC2), you should not attempt to tow another paddler. A loose tow line presents a serious entanglement hazard, and an improperly configured tow (for example, a line that is too short in following seas) can cause the towed kayak to surf into the towing kayak. Other hazards also exist.

Paddlers who have been trained in towing are encouraged to practice regularly in both calm and rough conditions, using a range of techniques (contact, in-line, multi-person, etc.). Understanding your own capabilities—and being prepared to assist others—can make a critical difference.

There are several helpful videos available online that cover basics; here are a few to get started:

In-line and contact towing, as well as towing a swimmer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp9L7W8THyc

Practical tips (and good music), including multi-person towing for impaired paddlers: https://tinyurl.com/y5kdyvn6

Contact towing, including proper carabiner attachment (bottom-up) to prevent accidental release: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OhowpFVDe8

by Jane Jacek

SISKA is a volunteer-run organization. We have no paid staff and our many activities continue due to the shared enthusiasm and skills of our membership. Thank you!

SISKA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) is happening on Wednesday April 22, 2026 and we want to share with you some interesting volunteer opportunities. Please consider how you can contribute to the wealth of skills training, kayak paddling, and fun that we have together.

Executive positions available - Our bylaws state that no one can serve more than four consecutive years in any one position on our Executive, unless the membership agrees to extend the term of office at a SISKA general meeting.

Secretary - Our secretary, Lisa Lasagna , will be finishing her second 2-year term. This position will be taking nominations at the AGM. If you wish a job description please contact our president.

Thank you to Lisa for her dedication and commitment to SISKA over the past 4 years as Secretary.

Treasurer - Our treasurer, Heather Thompson, will be completing her first 2-year term. She has kindly agreed to stand for reelection, for another 2 year term,

Member-at-large - Member at large, Konrad Sechley, will be completing his first 2-year term. He has kindly agreed to stand for reelection, for another 2 year term.

How to Run For Office - Any SISKA member can run for one of these positions. You can be nominated or nominate yourself, up to and including at the AGM. Even if you cannot attend that night, you can run by having someone nominate you and indicating in advance (e.g. by email) that you are willing to stand.

Finally, a gentle reminder to renew your SISKA membership for 2026 so that you can vote at the April AGM!

She spends summers guiding sea-kayaking and whitewater canoe expeditions on remote waterways across the North, and winters in Whitehorse, Yukon as Jackpine Paddle's Director of Operations and Outreach. After growing up in Ontario on the shores of Georgian Bay, her drive to spend as much time as possible outside led her first west, then north — where there are endless rivers to paddle, mountains to ski and trails to bike.

Now the team responsible for the website is looking for some Springtime assistance.

In the short term we need people to help check the current listings. It’s easy. Just a quick phonecall or email to our lodgings hosts. The bonus is that you’ll find out about all the cool places to stay around our coast. You may even decide you want to join the team.

by Elizabeth Purdon

The bright but chilly morning of January 24 saw 3 intrepid SISKA kayakers and two instructors (Jennie Sutton assisted by Elizabeth Purdon) on the beach by 8:00 AM for the first SISKA on water course of 2026. After a short session on land, we headed from Gyro beach to Cadboro Point for learning and fun in the currents. We stopped on the way out to practice low brace turns. Students gradually got the feel of crossing the current, ferry glides and entering and exiting the eddies. Some were even surfing on the small waves by the end of the session. Everyone stayed dry and had fun on this beautiful January day!

Wind Trap

by Gary Jacek

As I write this we are expecting strong wind in Victoria this coming Wednesday.

With the wind generally from the west, one of our go to locations is in the lee along the Gordon Head coastline which runs generally south to north, from Telegraph Bay to Margaret Bay.

This coastline is mostly made up of high banks and cliffs which shield paddlers from westerly winds. The one exception being a gap at Queen Alexandra where wind may accelerate through the gap. (Gap Wind)

However, there is a hidden hazard here that paddlers should consider. This route selection under these conditions also sets up a “Wind Trap”

If you examine the two screenshots below, you can see our planned route from location “0” through “6”, plus a return along the same route.

The corresponding wind prediction is 20 knots WSW. And it is pretty clear that the wind will be coming over the top of the high banks and cliffs.

It takes some distance for the wind to descend back to water level. You will see evidence of this close to shore, in the form of “cat paws”—gentle disturbances on the water.

Farther away from shore you will see waves begin to form as a result of the strong wind. Since the waves will be moving away from you, you won’t see the wave height or any breaking waves.

From your vantage point the conditions appear to be benign. And this is the “Wind Trap”.

If you paddle close to shore, you are in a protected apron of water. On the other hand, if you paddle farther from shore into areas where waves are beginning to form and the wind is stronger, you may not recognize you are getting into trouble. Once you are past the point where you can paddle into the wind and make headway back to shore, the offshore wind will carry you out into ever larger waves, then breaking waves and ever stronger wind. Eventually the worsening conditions exceed your ability to stay upright.

So the lesson here for SISKA trip participants is to listen carefully to your trip leader regarding expected wind and wave conditions.

And if you trip leader tells you to keep close the shore, it may be because they have recognized a Wind Trap and they want you safely tucked in.

Avoid the crowds. When you are planning a multi-day paddling trip, check to see if guided groups might be looking for the same camp spots. Google “guided kayak tours” for the area you want to visit to learn when they will be in the same area.

Nut Bars

I really like the Kirkland nut bars, and thought that they would be easy enough to duplicate, so here is my recipe and product. I sifted through a few recipes and came up with my own version, which I’m pretty pleased with.

Mix together eight cups of nuts and add -ins. I used whole almonds, cashews, pistachios, sunflower seeds, and pumpkin seeds. Alternatives might include coconut, peanuts, hazelnuts, raisins or cranberries. I mixed the whole lot together with one cup of maple syrup. I lined an 11” x 17” baking pan with parchment paper that was also sprayed with vegetable oil (Pam). The mixture was spread evenly throughout the pan and pressed down as best I could. I baked it for 40 minutes at 320 F. (Next time I’ll only give it 35 minutes, as I felt they were a bit overcooked). I melted about a cup of dark chocolate chips and spread them on the bottom of the bars after carefully turning them over. When they were completely cool I cut them into bars. There were a few crumbly bits after I cut them, which I just put in with my breakfast granola mix. I hope you enjoy this recipe.

Shake Off Winter: Time for Your Kayak Check-Up

Whether you’ve been paddling all winter or are just emerging from hibernation and looking ahead to some great spring outings, now is the perfect time to give your kayak a thorough inspection and a bit of maintenance. A little attention now can make a big difference in performance, safety, and enjoyment on the water.

Spring Tune-Up Checklist – the basics:

Inspect, repair or replace as needed all deck hardware, perimeter lines, rudder or skeg lines, and bungees

Lubricate rudder or skeg components, including pivots, cables and housings, and pedals or sliders

Apply 303 protectant to the outside of hatch covers to guard against UV damage, and to the inside to help get them on and off more easily

Check all your gear and repair as needed (paddle, pump, PFD, spray skirt, dry suit, adjust helmet chin strap, etc.)

Apply zipper lubricant to any zippers to keep them functioning smoothly

If your kayak has a rudder, there are several helpful maintenance videos available online that walk through the process step-by-step— find one that matches your setup. Well worth a check and maintenance before your first trip of the season.

And don’t forget to check the kayak rack on your car (all attachments and straps).

Yes, you know all the above…..so just do it!

This is especially important in understanding the potential for conflict with the increase in recreation on First Nations traditional territories including comprehending the shifting perspectives of this type of recreational usage. The listeners will also get a better understanding of approaches involving the care of the lands and waters we all share to ensure long term access.

by Fred Pishalski

At our February 25, 2026 SISKA monthly meeting we had two important presentations.

Heather Skippen, Harbour Official for Esquimalt and Nanoose Harbours, Transport Canada enforcement Officer and Casey Zaharoff, Master Warrant Officer, Department of National Defense provided safety information pertaining to the closing of ocean waters and beaches for demolition exercises in the DND’s Rocky Point area. Paddlers considering kayaking in that area need to Search for NAVWARNs before heading out.

EDITOR NOTE : The Navwarns "Rocky Point Demolition Blasting Notices" search link is always near the top of all newsletters under Convenient Links

EDITOR NOTE : See "Whirl Bay Access" next section below for a full map of the closed areas of Whirl Bay and Bentinck Island. Note that this closed area is much larger than what the government marine charts show. I asked this question at the meeting and they will work on it. Stay tuned for the next youtube video of this February meeting including the DND presentation.

Physical Oceanographer Dr. Richard Dewey spoke to us about Tibial Currents and Kayaking. He shared with us an introduction to the theory of tides and what causes the variations on time scales from hours to months. We learned about key aspects of local tides including tidal fronts, back-eddies, and wind-wave-tide interactions. Dr Dewey has published a new set of tide/current tables which can be found at https://www.dewey.ca/

Whirl Bay Access

by Jane Jacek / Ginny Flood

DND and TC (Transport Canada) have initiated meetings with local clubs to inform them that the Whirl Bay area is no longer accessible to the public. The DND Chart below indicates the Whirl Bay areas that are off limits. All the areas with the circles, as well as the area with the green border is DND property and beach access is not allowed, unless it is life/death situation.

Unauthorized access could result in a fine, up to a maximum fine of $5000 for individuals who are not in compliance with existing regulations that already govern access.

The rationale for the change is that there is concern for public safety given there may be undetonated explosives in the area (apparently one found at Rodd Hill recently) and, more importantly, DND is ramping up exercises in the area with very little notice to the public.

Spring is just around the corner and the first workshops on March 7th are just a couple of weeks away! There are still some spaces left for these early workshops so don't hesitate to sign up if they sound like something you might be interested in.

Overall the signups have been coming fast and furious and a number of courses already have waiting lists. Some new sessions have been added so please check the calendar to see what's new - List of All Upcoming Paddles & Events By Type. The Spring Training workshops are now listed in a bright pink colour so they're easier to distinguish from other SISKA offerings.

For the workshops that have waiting lists, we're reaching out to the Instructors to see if we can add more sessions. Also, if there are any workshop topics that you'd like to see but aren't listed, please let us know and we'll reach out to the partners to see if we can include them this year or add it to next year's offerings.

We are lucky to have so many skilled paddling businesses eager to work with us and provide exclusive training opportunities. A huge thanks goes out to Go Kayak, Best Coast Outfitters, BlueDog, SKILS, Cross Currents Kayak, Dancing with the Sea, and Ocean River Sports for working with us to provide this great series of on-water workshops.

Happy Paddling!

My name is Jan Kretz, owner of Adventuress Sea Kayaking in Nanoose Bay, BC. After 23 wonderful years, 2025 marked Adventuress’ final season as I move on to new adventures — including summer travels in my new-to-me trailer.

Adventuress has always been about more than tours. It has been a joy and an honour to share respect for the ocean, confidence on the water, and unforgettable experiences with so many incredible people. I will deeply miss the wilderness places, friendships, laughter, fun, and challenges that defined this journey.

Adventuress consistently delivered high-quality guided day tours, multi-day adventures, lessons, Paddle Canada courses, and rentals, earning top ratings on TripAdvisor and Google, along with a strong reputation for professionalism.

This turnkey, lifestyle-focused, owner-operated business is ideally suited to a certified guide or paddling professional interested in stepping into business ownership without starting from scratch. An extensive inventory of kayaks and equipment is included — everything is ready for the next season.

I am offering Adventuress through a private sale and hope to connect with a professional successor who values the lifestyle, guests, and care invested over the past 23 years.

I’d be happy to share further details, photos, and a confidential overview.

If you find it necessary to contact us about an issue you are experiencing the more information you supply in your initial request will go a long way to helping us to quickly resolve the issue.

If you send an email simply saying, for example, that you can't register for a particular paddle or clinic we will need to contact you for more information asking:

what it was that you were trying to do

was there an error message displayed

Generally when an error occurs an error message is displayed. The information in this message goes along way to helping us pinpoint the issue and resolve it fairly quickly. Without this information we will need to contact you for more information and the exchanging of emails simply adds a delay into putting a resolution into place.

So, in order for us to help you when you do submit a request for assistance:

provide a description of what you were doing

included a cop/screen shot of any error message

Oatmeal is back in the news, both as a filling and healthy start to the day and also for its cholesterol lowering benefits (guilty, I do like the finer tastes in life). Oatmeal also travels well in a kayak. Baking it has a slight nutritional edge over raw, but both are beneficial for sure. A basic search will give you lots of medical information and recipes, but here is a link to one of them.

Bear Bangers: A Tool for Paddling in Bear Country (with video)

When paddling and camping along our wild coastlines, you’re often traveling through bear habitat. Most of the time, good campsite habits, clean food storage, and situational awareness are all you need. Occasionally, though, wildlife may show a little too much curiosity. In those situations, a bear banger can provide an added layer of protection.

For those of you not familiar with bear bangers, they are small, handheld pyrotechnic devices that produce a loud, gunshot-like bang to deter wildlife. They are typically used with 15 mm pen-style launchers. While they can be effective, they are also classified as fireworks/explosives and must be handled responsibly.

After their recent Alaska–BC kayaking trip — during which they used a banger twice — Rob Zacharias and Alan Campbell created an excellent demonstration video on how to use one safely and effectively. Even if you caught it at the January 2026 SISKA monthly meeting, it’s well worth another look.

Bear Bangers vs. Bear Spray: When to Use Each

Bear bangers are one tool in your wildlife safety kit — and they should be carried in addition to bear spray, not instead of it. Each serves a different purpose.

Bear spray is your last line of defense. Use it if an animal is aggressive, charging, or already very close.

Bear bangers are an early deterrent. They’re intended to scare off wildlife — such as a bear or wolf — that is lingering near camp, approaching, or showing excessive curiosity, but not yet acting aggressively. The loud blast is meant to startle the animal and reinforce that humans are something to avoid.

Think of it this way: bangers can help prevent a situation from escalating; spray is for when it already has.

Additional Background

Safety Considerations

Always fire bear bangers into the air and away from the animal, never directly at wildlife. The goal is to startle, not injure.

Carry them unloaded.

They produce sparks and heat; in dry conditions there is a real fire risk.

Practice in a legal and appropriate location so you understand how your launcher works before you need it.

Regulations: Regulations vary by jurisdiction. Bear bangers are generally prohibited in Canada’s national parks. Always check local rules before your trip.

Where to buy: In Canada, bear bangers are available from numerous retailers such as MEC, Canadian Tire, Valhalla Pure, Sport Check, and others.

Disposal: Unused bear bangers shouldn’t go in the trash. They’re considered hazardous waste, so contact your local municipality for proper disposal options.

As with all wildlife encounters, prevention comes first: store food properly, keep a clean camp, give wildlife space, and stay aware of your surroundings.

TIDAL CURRENTS and KAYAKING
with Dr. Richard Dewey - Oceanographer

Wednesday February 25, 2026 - 7pm.

The presentation will provide an introduction to the theory of tides and what causes the variations on time scales from hours to months. There will be a brief review of tide information sources and how to interpret them. Finally, we will discuss key aspects of local tides most boaters and kayakers in the Pacific Northwest may be familiar with, including tidal fronts, back-eddies, and wind-wave-tide interactions.

Dr. Richard Dewey is a Physical Oceanographer who has lived on and studied the ocean around Vancouver Island for most of his life. Growing up in Victoria, he spent summers cruising throughout the Salish Sea with his family before university, including degrees from both UVic and UBC. Recently retired from Ocean Networks Canada at UVic, where he was a founding director, he once again cruises for 3-4 months each summer with his wife on their 1980 36' tri-cabin trawler.

Here’s a fun idea that Ali M brought along on our New Year’s Eve campout on Darcy Island. Who doesn’t love a cheese fondue? There are a few brands. This one can be found at Superstore. Just bring along a baguette and some dipping vegetables, and voila, you have dinner. She heated it up fireside in her Trangia stove set. Delicious!

Emergency Repair of a Dry Suit Gasket

So, you’re on the beach getting ready for a day trip or a multiday paddle—or you’re already deep into a trip—and as you pull your dry suit on ...oh no! A neck or wrist gasket tears. Suddenly your dry suit is no longer watertight, and if you fall in, cold water will rush in, turning a safety essential into a liability.

What can you do?

Joanne Nicolson suggests carrying a package of "flexible" tape in your repair kit for gasket repairs. There are a few different varieties one can purchase. For example, Tear-Aid Type A is an elastic, clear, strong, and watertight patch for on-the-spot emergency repair such as of a torn gasket.

Of course, this is very much an emergency measure, not a long-term fix. Plan to replace the damaged gasket once you are home.

As a bonus, Tear-Aid Type A and other similar flexible tapes are a versatile addition to any paddler’s kit. They also bond to synthetic fabrics so work well for quick repairs to tents, torn dry suites, puffy jackets, dry bags, and other gear when you’re far from help.

This small addition to your repair kit just might save a trip when you least expect to need it.
