Twelve from Victoria met up in Tahiti to explore French Polynesia in January 2026. Eight participated in a ten-day small ship cruise through the exotic Society Islands, visiting Tahiti, Morea, Bora Bora and more, while two did it by road trip. Then, all twelve bounced their way across Tahiti’s high mountains and deep valleys in two 4X4 trucks. Nine then met up with Exhibition Engineering owner Matt Edwards who escorted them on eight days of kayaking and exploring the stunning and laid-back Marquesas Islands of Nuka Hive, Hiva Oa and Tahuata. Two ended the trip with a few days in the Tuamotus.

Victoria BC Viewing
A proudly Canadian celebration of the sea.

Our Ocean Film Festival is a fresh, proudly Canadian festival created to celebrate the stories, people, and places that shape our connection to the ocean. Born from the momentum of Our Earth Film Festival and the incredible audiences who have embraced ocean-focused films, this new festival goes further: more films, more community, more support for local foundations, and a deeper commitment to the coastline we call home.

Tlatlasikwala First Nation have restricted visiting or camping on
Vansittart Island. The Tlatlasikwala homelands are on Northern
Vancouver Island. The four corner posts of the Territory are Triangle
(Scott) Island and Sea Otter Cove to the west and Pine Island and
Balaclava Islands to the east. The Tlatlasikwala First Nation has also
recently posted on their website that: “Bull harbour, Hope Island is
closed to the public. Absolutely nobody is permitted to come ashore at
this time”.

The BC Marine Trails Organization has received a report from a recent
visitor to the area that a Hope Island Bell Harbour tour or guide
company run by a first nation is using Vansittart Island as part of
their operation. Previous communications from the band have stated
that individuals interested in camping on Vansittart Island are
requested to contact the band office http://www.tlatlasikwala.com
and seek permission. It is unknown if permission has been granted.

Swartz Bay to Saltspring Island
by Alexandra Lapierre Fortin

On August 8th, 12 paddlers took part in a one-way ferry-assisted paddle to Fulford Harbour. We left Swartz Bay on a rising tide and made our way to Russell Island via a short stop at Arbutus Point. It was a glorious, calm, sunny day. We took a nice long lunch break on Russell Island, with some of us walking to the old Hawaiian homestead. One brave paddler even took the opportunity to have an ocean swim! The winds came up just enough to push us into Fulford Harbour with time to spare before our ferry. The team was very efficient at getting everyone off at the dock, and we had some time to explore shops and ice cream options before heading back to Swartz Bay. A really fun day!

Crystal Pool Status

by Ginny Flood

It’s official, the last day of operations at Crystal Pool is Friday, September 25, end of day. The interim Recreation facility at 851 Broughton Street will open in early 2027 once repairs and upgrades are completed. Unfortunately, this means that SISKA will not be offering any pool sessions unless we are able to find an alternate facility.

To date, we have contacted a number of facilities; however, have been unable to secure space. If you are aware of a facility that would accommodate SISKA, please reach out to Ginny Flood @ onwater@siska.ca.

For additional information, I’ve attached the City’s Official Statement:

Crystal Pool and Fitness Centre will close permanently on Sept. 25, 2026, to allow for construction of the City's new health and wellness facility.

Recreation services will transition to the City's interim recreation facility at 851 Broughton St., which will be named Victoria Recreation Centre. Following a water leak incident earlier this summer, repairs and upgrades are underway, and the facility is expected to open in early 2027.

Victoria Recreation Centre will provide continued access to recreation services while the permanent replacement facility is being built. The interim facility will include expanded fitness areas, group fitness rooms, a gymnasium and squash courts, as well as a smaller pool that will support lessons, swim clubs and aquafit.

Additional information about the closure, transition plans and project status is available in the City's latest news update. We have also attached a document with key messages and an FAQ to help answer some of the questions you may have. Please feel free to redirect any questions about your specific contract to me.

Thank you for your continued interest in this project. We will continue to share updates as additional information becomes available.

Thanks,

Perimeter Lines — An Important Safety Feature of Your Kayak’s Deck Lines
By Sybil Seitzinger with input from Mike Teachman and Andrew Cusack

Perimeter lines are made of static (non-stretch) cord that runs along the outer edges of the bow and stern of a sea kayak. Unlike the stretchy bungee cord that secures gear to the kayak’s deck, perimeter lines are an essential safety feature used in re-entry and towing situations. Members should be aware that perimeter lines are required on all kayaks participating in SISKA paddle trips. The trip leader has the authority to deny participation if a participant’s kayak does not have satisfactory perimeter deck lines.

Why are perimeter lines so important?

Self-rescue: They give you something secure and easy to grab if you are in the water, helping you stay connected to your kayak in wind and waves.

Assisted rescue: They allow another paddler to quickly grab, maneuver and hold your kayak during an assisted re-entry.

Towing and assistance: They provide secure points for quickly attaching a tow line or contact-tow lines, typically with a carabiner clipped to the perimeter line.

Rafting-up and handling: They make it much easier to hold kayaks together or maneuver a kayak in the water.

What makes a good perimeter line?

Perimeter lines should be strong, static (non-stretch), securely attached and easy to grab. Marine-grade nylon or polyester cord, typically about 4–5 mm in diameter, is commonly used. Reflective line can make the kayak—and its grab lines—more visible in low-light conditions.
The lines should be sufficiently raised from the deck that they can be grabbed easily, including with cold or gloved hands. Short sections of flexible tubing can be used to cover the line on either side of the cockpit to make it easier to grab and hold onto the kayak.

Check your kayak
Regularly check that your perimeter lines are:

secure and firmly attached – check fittings and knots

in good condition – aren’t frayed, brittle, or otherwise damaged

tight enough to remain useful but have enough slack to grab quickly with a glove on.

Bottom line: In a capsize or rescue, perimeter lines may be what allows you or another paddler to maintain control of the kayak. They are an integral part of your deck rigging and essential sea-kayak safety equipment.

by Marika Stephenson

Nine paddlers ventured out to D'Arcy Island from Island View Beach and won the lottery by having the most perfect calm waters throughout the day. This paddle is one of the most challenging to organize due to sea state conditions that can quickly deteriorate for the long 3nm crossing. Let's hope we can organize another paddle out to this magical area soon!

Sea Otter Lodge - July 20-24, 2026

by Debbie Leach

Gliding past colourful ochre sea stars and giant green anemones; pausing to watch sea otters in the middle distance. And calling ‘whale!’ as a humpback meandered through the islands near the lodge. Just another memorable day of glamping in Kyuquot Sound.

Last year Jane Jacek had learned about Sea Otter Lodge and went there with the “Salish Salties” group of paddlers. This July she organized a return trip with Gary, their friend Heather from New Zealand, and nine friends.

The group met at Fair Harbour which is a 1¾ hour drive on a decent gravel road off the Island Highway. Some of us stopped for lunch in Zeballos enroute. After unloading on the dock at Fair Harbor we parked in the overflow lot close to the campground. The trip to Sea Otter Lodge (on Kon Tiki Island near Kyuquot) took about 30 minutes - in two Voyager water taxis driven by Leo Jack and his daughter Trinity. We were greeted by owners Skip and Susan who showed us around the Lodge. The couples took the 4 bedrooms on the main floor and 4 solo women shared the upper floor bedroom with its ensuite and deck. Although the Lodge had WIFI and was well-appointed, we had to shower one-at-a-time to ensure no cold shocks - so we employed a shower stick and ‘passed the baton’. It was cozy seating 12 of us around the dining table; the great room or shady back deck were useful for paddle planning. If we’d had a rainy day there would be plenty of books and DVD’s to keep us busy. The walk around the island was a pleasant 8 minute circuit through the woods.

We had light winds for 3 days and the last one was overcast with less than 10 knots wind. Low tides at mid day made for easy launching from the cobble beach down from the Lodge and dock. Gary and Jane lead paddles after group decision-making the previous evening. We were on the water by 9 a.m. and typically back by 2 pm to avoid afternoon winds.

Gary’s tracks summarized our routes. We experienced SW swell and had a few long crossings.

Monday we paddled to Spring Island for lunch and a chance to explore the campsite, conduct a Site Condition Report for BC Marine Trails, hike to the abandoned radar station and basketball court as well as collect marine debris.(Red line, 8.1 NM) Challenges included SW swells and longer crossings.

Tuesday's route was to Union Island and an exploration of Kyuquot Bay where we ate lunch at an abandoned campsite on a rocky shore. (Yellow-green line, 9.7 NM).

Wednesday's shoreline paddle took us to McLean Island. On the way back we pulled in below the dock in Kyuquot (used by the Uchuck) , shopped at the store and walked 10 minutes along the shore but knew the restaurant at Kyuquot Inn wasn’t open til 4:30. Some of us ventured into McKay Cove where we spied a black bear grazing. (Turquoise line, 10.1 NM)

Thursday’s route was up Crowther Channel (with traffic signs posted in the trees) to Surprise Island. (Dark blue line, 8.7 NM] Be careful, since power boats zip up and down this channel!

Paddlers brought their own breakfasts and lunches and 4 pairs took turns preparing dinners. Jaceks provided appies featuring local salmon and cheeses with baklava and chocolate for dessert..

Our group shared good times and tasty meals as well as fond memories and photos/tracks. We learned that Nanaimo Paddlers would be staying the next week. They return often and SISKA members should take advantage of this opportunity to experience the west coast and relax in comfort at Sea Otter Lodge.

Marine Radios: "Line of Sight" Really Matters

So, everyone has a marine radio and operator's certificate now, right? …And you always carry your radio when you're on the water? Great!
We all know VHF marine radios work only in line of sight. But it's surprising how little land it takes to block the signal.
Picture this: you're paddling with a buddy along the coast. You look up and they're gone. You call them on the agreed Channel 69 for communication—no response. You try again a few minutes later. Still nothing. Why are they not responding? You imagine the worst (e.g., flipped over; couldn’t self-rescue and have drifted out of sight). You search ahead and behind, but there's no sign of them or their kayak. As 20–30 minutes pass, you're beginning to wonder whether it's time to call the Coast Guard.

Then your buddy finally appears, paddling around a small headland just across the bay.
What happened? The headland blocked the radio signal. Your buddy had been calling you too and was searching but in the opposite direction from you, and neither of you was within line of sight. When they couldn't reach you, they retraced their route to the last place they'd seen you—and eventually found you.

Of course, we all know we should stay within line of sight—but sometimes the unexpected happens.
The next time you're out paddling, try an experiment. Have one paddler remain in place while the other disappears behind a point of land, staying in radio contact until the signal is lost. You may be surprised how little rock or shoreline it takes to block a VHF transmission.
Understanding your radio's limitations can help prevent unnecessary worry—and perhaps save an embarrassing call to the Coast Guard.

Ginny Flood, Andrew Cusack, Konrad Sechley

The SISKA web site has been redesigned to streamline the database, reduce issues, increase security, and make the site mobile friendly. The anticipated release date of the new web site will be at the end of August.

A test site that can be accessed use your regular log-in ID can be found at: https://v6.siska.ca

Members are encouraged to try out the new test site, using both their home computer and mobile device, and provide feedback. The test site is isolated from the main SISKA database, so you can play around with the site without fear of making any alterations to the main data base - sign up for a paddle, become a SISKA member, check out the calendar. If you send out an email it will just go to you and no one else. If you are a paddle leader, set up a paddle and test the various options.

Instructional videos about the revised web site will be available later this summer and will be accessible through the current SISKA web site and the test web site. Once these videos are ready a note will be sent out to the membership.

If you have any suggestions or identify any issues while testing the site please send your comments to: Geoff Nicol and Dave O at: web@siska.ca

Once the web site is officially released in late August any issues with the site should be sent to: web@siska.ca

Many thanks to Geoff Nicol for the many hours he has put into this project and to Dave O for his continued support of the project and web site.

Written by Eric Brandon here in Victoria. Try it out. Don't forget to click the name of a site for a table or wave of the tide or current.

by Rod Stiebel

This year the club tried something different, again. On Saturday June 6 at Cadboro/Gyro Park we combined the Kayak Fest with the SISKA picnic for one big fun event. It worked!

The weather was a bit suspect, but we had mostly sunny skies with some threatening clouds that burst open for only a bit early on, then abated with perfect timing. Attendance was at least double from last year, as we did draw more folks with the lure of trying out one of the many kayaks on display by vendors like Best Coast with Zegul kayaks, Creek to Coast showing off Rockpool and Valley Kayaks as well as Trak Kayaks and Surfside Paddlesports showing off some of their fleet of Stellar kayaks….I know which one I want!

We also had BC Marine Trails in attendance showing what they do, and encouraging all to join. It is only $35.00/year, and worth every penny.

Leslie MacCallum was showcasing her gasket replacement business, many of the club members use her services, I have.

Alan Campbell was also there showing folks how he can make 2 tables of kayak/camping gear disappear into his craft, magical, and quite informative.

Andrew Cusack and Konrad Sechley were also doing their deck line replacement duties, and were very busy all day, kudos for the hard work!

Edgar Hulatt put on a table top clinic on local tides and currents around the island, also well attended.

Mike Teachman was a great resource for explaining the inner workings of how a Greenland paddle is made, with some displays of part finished and finished products.

There was coffee and light snacks, and we served over 100 cups of java that morning! Kudos to Sarah for manning the coffee station. Of course, we had the as always popular Gear Swap. Lots of good deals, and at least one kayak was sold, as well as lots of peripheral gear. The circular economy wins again!

The afternoon relaxed paddle at 1PM was lead by Jane Jacek our ever busy Club President.

In retrospect, it was indeed a great day for club members, and we may have even convinced a few new folks to join. We hope next year to be even bigger and better. The engine that drove this event is all the hard working volunteers. To them I convey my gratitude, as this would not happen without your support. I urge all members to look at this and think about picking an event to volunteer for, maybe even suggesting an event for the club yourself. We are so lucky to have the opportunity for making such great friendships, both on and off the water!

GIGAbite Trip Report

by Sarah Hood

The 2026 GIGAbite: A SISKA Expedition in Four Courses
June 15–18, 2026

Nineteen members of the South Island Sea Kayaking Association embarked upon the 2026 GIGAbite: the Gulf Island Gourmet Adventure. The objective was simple: paddle hard, eat well, and don’t be the first to fall out of your boat.

The expedition owed its success to the granddaddy of the GigaBite Tim Frick, whose planning bordered on military precision. Tim’s schedules operated in increments of twenty-two minutes, suggesting either a deep understanding of tidal dynamics or the possession of an unusual stopwatch. Every detail had been considered, contingency plans had contingency plans, and all participants were expertly shepherded from one activity to the next.

And yet, despite this remarkable organization, the SISKA Time Warp remained undefeated. Paddlers routinely arrived fully prepared an hour before launch time, only to find themselves scrambling frantically to load items into boats at the final possible moment. This phenomenon remains unexplained by modern science.

Day One: Paddle to Mayne Island and a Cougar Attack. The adventure began with an early ferry crossing from Swartz Bay to Otter Bay, followed by a launch from Hope Bay and a paddle to Kadonaga Bay on Mayne Island.

The route continued westward along Mayne Island to Dinner Bay, where lunch was followed by a fiercely contested game of Disc Golf. Competitors displayed an impressive commitment to the official rules, at least when those rules appeared advantageous. Others toured the Japanese Gardens, while a third group sat quietly watching the tide creep steadily toward eighteen unattended kayaks on the beach—a spectator sport peculiar to west coast paddlers.

Back at Port Browning, camp life quickly settled into a rhythm defined by the swimming pool, the nightly trip meetings, and the mysterious operation of the bathroom pass system, which appeared to function according to criteria known only to the management.

Most dramatically, Shirley’s kayak suffered a cougar attack. Not that kind of cougar. No wildlife was involved, unless you count the guy trying to back up his Cougar Trailer. The details remain subject to witness interpretation, but the phrase “cougar attack” remains part of the story.

Dinner was at the Port Browning Pub and the evening’s entertainment featured bagpipes on the dock at 9:30pm, because apparently no Gulf Islands experience is complete without unexpectedly hearing Scotland’s advance at sunset.

Day Two: Marine Life, Archeology and Lost Shoes. Tuesday’s route followed the dramatic bluffs of Pender Island from Thieves Bay, with paddlers hugging the shoreline closely enough to appreciate the extraordinary marine life.

Pigeon Guillemots nested among the cliffs. Beneath the surface, anemones waved gently among green and purple sea urchins, sea cucumbers, gumboot chitons, and a report of a lemon nudibranch. Every few metres seemed to reveal another reason not to paddle too quickly.

Tim provided a running commentary on local history and repeatedly promised prizes for anyone spotting historical markers, plaques and rock graffiti. Participants enthusiastically searched shorelines, cliffs, and obscure corners of the islands. Plaques were located. Historical graffiti was identified. No prizes were ever awarded. A formal inquiry may be required.

On our way back through Bedwell Harbour Morley shared information about the region’s Indigenous history, including a clamshell midden, archaeological artifacts, and the impact of the digging of the canal connecting North and South Pender. We learned how construction of the canal disturbed Indigenous burial sites and how the remains were later respectfully reinterred nearby.

Rich and Helen spotted a mother otter with two young kits.

After a full day of paddling, some sought additional adventure with a hike up up up and more up Mount Norman before dinner. The spectacular views were well worth the climb.

Dinner at the Copper Otter was in two shifts and the food was excellent.

Liz lost her shoes, looked for them all afternoon, and then found them after dinner exactly where she had left them in the Hope Bay parking lot the previous day. This is surely a testament to Pender’s unique community vibe.

Day Three: South Pender and Defrocking. Wednesday featured a clockwise circumnavigation of South Pender Island and a lunch stop at Poet’s Cove where the expedition’s most important linguistic contribution was made.

The transition from paddling attire to restaurant-appropriate appearance required participants to remove drysuits, paddling layers, and assorted gear to don dry and mostly clean clothes while simultaneously preserving some degree of public dignity. This process inevitably involved exposed backsides, visible sports bras, and a general atmosphere of controlled chaos. Tim repeatedly referred to this procedure as “defrocking” which brings to mind the famous quote from the 1987 classic film The Princess Bride: “You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.” The term nevertheless entered the SISKA vocabulary and appears likely to remain there indefinitely.

Wildlife continued to impress, but the otter family failed to make a second appearance.

Two bald eagles were observed casually eating a fish at the shoreline while eighteen kayakers floated past. The eagles appeared mildly curious but otherwise unimpressed by the spectacle.

Notably absent from the wildlife checklist were whales. According to established expedition protocol, this was entirely Tim’s fault.

No paddler can really claim full membership in the GIGAbite club without the ritualistic clamber through the portal of paddlers, Hole in the Wall. Secret handshake and club chant only shared with initiates once this test has been passed.

Day Four: Wind, Wisdom, and Feral Goats. The final day required an early pack-up as strengthening winds forced a shortened route. The group launched directly from Port Browning, crossed to Saturna Island, and arrived in time to defrock for lunch at the Sage Hayward Feral Goat Bistro.

The shortened paddle created one final opportunity for the expedition’s newest paddle leader. Marika conducted her first trip leadership assignment during the strongest winds and largest seas encountered during the GigaBite. Congratulations, Marika.

By late afternoon, boats were loaded, gear was stowed, and participants settled into the wait for the evening ferry.

Distinguished Guests
The group also enjoyed the company of several special guests: Tracey from New Zealand, David from Pender Island, and Alek’s wife Natalia, all of whom contributed greatly to the camaraderie of the trip. And of course there was the courageous mother camping alone with four young children. Her bravery deserves formal recognition.

Conclusions
The 2026 GIGAbite successfully combined sea kayaking, gourmet dining, island history, wildlife encounters, meteorological uncertainty, questionable terminology, and a complete absence of prizes.

Through it all, Tim’s carefully orchestrated plans somehow carried the group from launch to lunch, from paddle to pub, and safely back home again. Thank you Tim, for another great GIGAbite.

New SISKA Web & Mobile Site - Coming Soon!

by Konrad Sechley

Ginny Flood, Andrew Cusack, Konrad Sechley

There has been much activity in redesigning the SISKA web site to streamline the database, reduce issues, increase security, and make the site mobile friendly - and all of this work is finally coming to fruition with an anticipated release date at the end of August. Many thanks to Geoff Nicol for the many hours he has put into this project and to Dave O for his continued support of the project and web site.

A presentation introducing the revised SISKA web site was made during SISKA AGM meeting in April and members were encouraged to test the site and provide feedback. This process is ongoing and members are encouraged to test drive the new site both from their home computer and mobile device.

The test site (use your regular log-in ID) can be accessed at: https://v6.siska.ca

Many thanks to Geoff and Dave for this effort!

They can accommodate up to 16 paddlers, in full luxury, with gourmet meals every day, with super attentive staff, including Mac, Gina’s right hand Gal.

The hot tub comes in handy after a long paddle, and pool, table tennis and more await in the grand hall of the resort. Here, you want for nothing, including Bloody Caesars, made by Mac, delish!

This place offers a little bit of everything when it comes to paddling. You can go on the “Wild Side”, as BJ will explain in the first trip, visiting Marble River for some active water play. Or go for the “Mild Side”, where the pace is slower, the tides are lower and the intertidal viewing is unmatched.

You can decide what you like, after you hear our stories..

BJ Porter. The Wild Side May 10 to 14, 2026

The Wild Side Gang

We were a combination of returning and first time guests of Kagoagh Lodge, and as expected Gina and Tyler’s hospitality was kind, skilful and unstinting.

We arranged our own accommodation for the night of May 9th but we met up as a large group to share a meal at the pub at the Kwa'lilas Hotel. That was just for fun but we met briefly after to discuss water taxi and paddling plans. Each subsequent evening we discussed plans for the following day.

Paddling in and out via Quatsino Narrows was fun; we were close to maximum flood and ebb for the days we were there.

There was still more fun to be had on a day trip to the Marble River! There is an infamous grotto that shall henceforward be named The Cave That Swallows Boats, after four SISKA capsizes in three years. It is a right angle turn downstream from an overflowing ‘V’ that is often very high volume and fast.

This year I was one of its hapless victims, playing successfully on the right of the ‘V’ and then helplessly pushed backward into the wall under the overhang when I tried the left hand side. Another paddler, heading downstream, underestimated the strength of the water pushing his boat into that same wall and thought the main flow would take him around safely; not so much. Helmets are now STRONGLY recommended for anyone exploring the Marble River.

We lined our kayaks (with great effort) around the offending ‘V’ only to find a waterfall impeding our travel upstream almost right away. More fun at the base of the falls.

Each paddling day we had a shorter and a longer paddle, which served everyone’s needs admirably. The longest paddle was a circumnavigation of Drake Island.

One wildlife highlight, seen by some lucky folk, was an eagle unable to take flight with a large fish, swimming breast stroke style to shore with it. We saw a number of sea otters, principally in the Marble River estuary where we estimated their numbers as twenty-five plus.

Maybe it’s not such a wild life any more, but we enjoyed really fun evenings showing off the laughable depth of our incompetence in ping pong, pool, chess, darts, and air hockey.

Rod Stiebel. The Mild Side. May 19 to 23, 2026

The Mild Side Gang

We had a compliment of 14 paddlers and my non-paddling assistant, my lovely wife, Andrea, who loves the walks in the woods with Stella, the Lodge Dog, the camaraderie and the scrumptious meals served daily. We had some new folks, and, of course the regulars, like ourselves, who have been going for 3 years now, and a 4th to follow!

Our group also met at Kwa’lillas for dinner the night before our water taxi departure, it is a lovely Indigenous run hotel in Port Hardy, we stayed there also, and would recommend it to anyone. It is only a 20 minute drive from there to Coal Harbour and the water taxi.

We had the lower tides, and could not paddle out this year, as the currents through the narrows were too fast at arrival time. That said, because we had low tides, the wild life viewing was quite rewarding. We did 3 full days of paddling, not including a short one late afternoon on arrival day. A circumnavigation of Drake Island, and visit to Pamphlet Cove and Atkins Cove did not disappoint on all the intertidal life, and yes! The stars are back! Ochre, Leather, Bat and Blood stars galore. We also were treated to number of Sea Otters, and a very curious River Otter in Pamphlet Cove.

The mandatory visit to the Quatsino Village Museum was also accomplished on one of the shorter paddles. We did put in approximately 32nm, or 60 kms. It was easy going as we had lovely weather and almost no winds.

Being the "Mild Side" gang, we had no capsizes, but maybe a few equipment issues, that were easily repaired by the Pit Crew, spear-headed by Gary J. We did have at least one brave soul that took a dip in the Saltchuck, brava Karen! The hot tub did get frequent use, so nice after a long paddle.

Bottom line, if you can, get out there, Gina and Tyler are great hosts, the paddling is super, as is the food and accommodations. There are plans to have a SISKA led group next year, all that is needed is a paddle leader willing to organize and lead a group. If you enjoyed the Broken Group, this will that plus LUXURY.
Safety Item - Heat Exhaustion

by Sybil Seitzinger

Prepare for—and Avoid—Heat Exhaustion

Summer paddling is some of the best of the year, although with the warmer temperatures heat exhaustion can be a problem. Heat exhaustion is serious, but it’s also very preventable. It can sneak up on you when you mix warm weather, sun, and steady paddling—and a dry suit can intensify the effect.
Watch for signs like dizziness, fatigue, heavy sweating, nausea, or a headache—those are your cues to act early and very importantly avoid heatstroke. A little planning, on and off the water, goes a long way in avoiding heat exhaustion and dehydration.
Most of this will sound familiar—but it’s worth keeping top of mind before heading out.

A few key things to keep in mind:

Time of day:
If you’re organizing your own paddle, aim for earlier or late afternoon starts to avoid peak heat. Many SISKA paddles run right through the warmest part of the day (roughly 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.), so plan accordingly and pace yourself.

Hydration:
Start hydrating before you launch (or even the night before) and keep drinking regularly—about 300 ml (10 oz) per hour is a good target. Don’t wait until you feel thirsty. Cold drinks, or adding a bit of diluted juice or sports drink, can make it easier to keep drinking.

Food:
Eat before and during your paddle. Snacks that help replace electrolytes—like fruit, nuts, yogurt, or something salty—can make a difference over a long day.

Clothing and sunscreen:
Wear light, breathable layers under your drysuit when possible, and bring a hat. Apply sunscreen to exposed skin and reapply regularly.

Cool off:
Use the water to your advantage—dip your hands, splash your face, or pour water over your head. A wet cloth around your neck or forehead helps. And if you’re comfortable rolling, that works too.

Seek shade:
Take breaks when you can. The shady side of an island or a short shore stop in the shade can help you cool down and reset.

If you experience increasing symptoms of heat exhaustion, alert your fellow paddlers—including the trip leader—right away. Take immediate steps to cool down and rehydrate, as symptoms can quickly progress to life-threatening heatstroke if ignored.

Saturday June 6, 2026

This is the main SISKA event before the summer paddling season kicks in to top gear. All are welcome, not just members, so invite your non SISKA friends. Drop by for an hour, or bring your lunch and make a day of it. Besides the famous Gear Swap, we will have a few different kayaks to demo, and our regular demos and info sessions, land and water based clinics, plus a relaxed afternoon paddle. You MUST register for these clinics at president@siska.ca to Jane, for any of these FREE clinics or the paddle.

Coffee and snacks will be offered at the SISKA Welcome Tent, where you can get more info and directions from our KayakFest Ambassadors. A great opportunity to see what is new, meet a bunch of other members, and maybe even get a few new members to join. The main idea is a fun, relaxed event. So save the date, and we will see you there!

Wednesday May 27, 2026 - 7:00pm

with Jacques Sirois NWP

Topic - NEARBY NATURE IN AND NEAR, THE VICTORIA HARBOUR MIGRATORY BIRD SANCTUARY

Tonight's meeting is co-sponsored along with Ocean River Sports.

When SISKA asked Jacques if he would be our May speaker he mentioned that Ocean River had asked if he would do a talk for them. In conversation with Jacques and Jamie Dawson from OR, it was decided to do a joint presentation.

Ocean River, a locally owned business, has been a cornerstone of the Victoria paddling community for over 40 years. Ocean River offers guided tours, professional instruction, clinics, rentals, and a full retail shop stocked with quality gear. They don’t just sell the lifestyle — they live it.

Ocean River has been a valued SISKA supporter for years.

Naturalist, birdwatcher and kayaker, Jacques has been promoting the revitalization of historic Victoria Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary (est.1923) for two decades. He will talk about recent, sightings of birds and mammals as well as various restoration projects and events.

He is a partner of the Greater Victoria NatureHood (GVNH), an initiative promoted by Nature Canada* with a particular interest in the future of three regional, historic Migratory Bird Sanctuaries and “Nature in the City”.

GVNH is also promoting the creation of a UNESCO Biosphere Region in B.C.’s Capital Region.

* originally known as the Audubon Society of Canada.

Jacques, a volunteer warden at the Trial Islands Ecological Preserve, has counted 150 California sea lions, five Steller sea lions and 300 harbour seals on a kayak trip around the rocky shores. “We haven’t seen anything like this for over 25 years.”

Jacques is an influential Canadian ornithologist and conservationist, best known for his work restoring the Migratory Bird Sanctuary and promoting urban nature initiatives in Greater Victoria.

On top of all that, Jacques has been involved with habitat restoration and removal of invasive species. He has led volunteer-driven clearing of non-native plants such as English ivy, Himalayan blackberry, and daphne at key locations including the McNeill Bay bluff and Kitty Islet shoreline. The cleared areas were replanted with indigenous species such as Garry oaks, Pacific crabapple, Saskatoons, and Oregon grape to restore habitat for migratory birds.

It’s that time of year to get all prepped to go to where the wilderness calls you. I do mostly "ingredients" dehydrating, with some "complete meals" dehydrating. Either way is great. Remember to do onions and garlic outside or in the garage. They can permeate the walls I swear. Here’s a recipe for seeded crackers to whet your appetite.

Safety Item

by Sybil Seitzinger

Who Tows? Not the Trip Leader

In reviewing trip reports from the past 12 months, the most frequently noted safety comment involved a tired paddler that needed a tow. At the recent SISKA Trip Leaders meeting, several important points were discussed that all SISKA members should keep in mind regarding towing.

If you plan to join a SISKA paddle and are unsure of your ability (e.g. injury, not feeling well, weather/water conditions) to complete the full journey and may need a tow, it is your responsibility to let the trip leader know during the pre-paddle beach briefing. The leader will then ask if any participant is willing to volunteer as a potential tow. If no one is available, the trip leader reserves the right to exclude you from that paddle.
It is not the responsibility of the trip leader to tow participants. In fact, trip leaders should avoid taking on towing duties, as their role is to manage the group and overall safety.

As we all know, conditions can change quickly. Fatigue, injury, or worsening weather and water conditions may mean that even strong paddlers require assistance. As soon as you suspect that you might need a tow, let the trip leader know so that they can identify someone to tow you if needed.

If you have not received towing training (included in PC2), you should not attempt to tow another paddler. A loose tow line presents a serious entanglement hazard, and an improperly configured tow (for example, a line that is too short in following seas) can cause the towed kayak to surf into the towing kayak. Other hazards also exist.

Paddlers who have been trained in towing are encouraged to practice regularly in both calm and rough conditions, using a range of techniques (contact, in-line, multi-person, etc.). Understanding your own capabilities—and being prepared to assist others—can make a critical difference.

There are several helpful videos available online that cover basics; here are a few to get started:

In-line and contact towing, as well as towing a swimmer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xp9L7W8THyc

Practical tips (and good music), including multi-person towing for impaired paddlers: https://tinyurl.com/y5kdyvn6

Contact towing, including proper carabiner attachment (bottom-up) to prevent accidental release: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1OhowpFVDe8
